Leaving the comfort and expectations of home, Amanda Smith travels to Pécs, Hungary to research her grandpapa’s past. She quickly embraces the beauty and history of the walled city, wishing for an alternate life where her grandpapa had never left in the first place. Her sense of homecoming increases when she meets Luca, a Romani dancer whose moves could melt her clothes off, and she yearns to get to know him more when she observes him caring for his dying sister. After a short summer fling, she agrees to an odd marriage proposal.

Her grandpapa’s brother visits right before the wedding, exposing the real reason his brother fled Hungary for America. Secrets open old wounds, revealing a connection with Luca’s clan. Following the revelation, the Romani family, including her fiancé, rejects Amanda because of clan loyalties. Now she questions everything she knew about her beloved grandpapa and searches for a way to repair wounds she didn’t intend to open.

In the wake of her grandfather's death, a smart but flighty young American woman named Amanda Smith traveled to Pecs, Hungary to learn about her family heritage, only to find information that she would wish that she had never known. In the meantime, what began as a summer fling with a Romani man named Luca became serious. As the couple became more deeply involved, the intersection of their cultural differences became more complex, and revelations of past relationships between the families of the two lovers complicated their lives further.

While there are strong elements of romance in this novel, it is not a light read. Amanda experiences anguish in nearly every way imaginable, and the author expertly works her research into Romani culture, as well as the Hungarian city of Pecs, into the work. The complexity of the problems experienced by the protagonist are brought to a satisfying, though multifaceted conclusion. My only complaint about the book is that the author, intent on making sure that readers know about the intense passion of the young couple for one another, repeatedly describes their displays of affection, which were mostly of a public nature. The book describes no actual sexual encounters, as such would fall outside Romani mores.

That aside, the book is a well researched page turner and highly recommended.

Behind the Open Walls edition by Lanette Kauten Whitney Smyth Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Wow. What a great book! The characters, and the way the story was told makes you feel like you are right there in the book experiencing everything the characters are experiencing. Love that Amanda went back to her Grandfathers country and fell in the love with the city so much that she decided to stay there. The story shows how it is so hard to combine two cultures but in the end love trumps all. I do feel that the ending was a bit rushed and I wanted to read more about how they are handling living together. I hope the author continues this story because I highly enjoyed it and recommend it.
This is a story about a young woman who after losing her grandfather decides to visit the place where he grew up, Pecs, Hungary. Amanda is staying with her cousin Malika and her family. One day while exploring she runs into some Romani putting on a show for the crowd. She befriends Jolan and has a fling with her brother Luca. But then she learns an awful secret about her grandfather, a secret that tears her and Luca apart.
I found this book to be rich in Hungarian history (being half Hungarian myself-my father) which I enjoyed. The characters come alive and you feel like you’re there with them. It is a well written story and worth the time to be read.

I was a little disappointed in this story. I felt that it was little to drawn out and took to long to tell the story. But at the same time I really, really liked the story line. I loved that Amanda got to learn about her Grandpapa even if it wasn’t what she was wanting to hear. And so liked that her family and Luca’s family were intertwined well before they even met. I did feel like the ending kind of slopped, but it was still a happy-ever-after ending. I would still recommend reading the story, it gives you a little bit of history to go along with the romance.
Loved this book. Romance, past mysteries embroidered with murder and family hardship along with culture hardships.
Amanda is in Hungary to find out about her beloved Grandpa past. Unknown to her, her past is riddled with mystery, romance and even murder. Finding all the ins and outs of her past are tough enough without her family breathing down her neck. Telling her she belongs in America. And is American not Hungarian or a Romi. But with a man named Luca at her side. She is willing to convert to his Romi traditions, but he also needs to understand her wants and needs. Which he does. But with people on both sides opposing them. Will they ever find love together? Will she ever find out what happened with her grandfather in Hungary....
Amanda Smith has traveled to Hungary in order to learn more about her late grandfather's past. She falls for a Romani man named Luca and has difficulty accepting the customs and traditions of his family. After learning some horrible truths about her grandfather, Amanda must make a decision to either return to America or confront her grandfather's past and fight for her future.

I felt a real connection to Amanda in her wanting to find out more about her grandfather's life before he came to America. It has always upset me that I didn't have a chance to talk with my grandfather about his life growing up in Eastern Europe because he died when I was still a child.

I found the parts of the book about the Romani traditions and customs fascinating. I'll admit that I knew next to nothing about them prior to reading this book other than the term "gypsy" is considered a slur.

At times some of the characters could be frustrating to read. Amanda sometimes came across as selfish and everyone seemed to behave irrationally at one time or another. That doesn't mean that they were poorly written and developed characters. It just means that at times I wanted to slap some sense into them.

I received a free copy of this book and that is my honest review.
The story revolves around a young American woman named Amanda Smith who came to Hungary to investigate the history of her grandfather. Her time in Pecs, Hungary brings her in contact and later conflict with the Romani culture. An accidental meeting with a young Romani develops into a love relationship that runs into an immovable wall of cultural differences. Most American women would have caught the next plane back to America, but not Amanda. One can either admire this commitment or feel frustrated that she gave so much for what a non-romantic would feel is so little.

The pace of the book moved reasonably well and the characters were realistic.

The most interesting areas of the book for me revolved around the Romani culture and the conflicts that resulted for Amanda. The information she found about her grandfather was a secondary plot that added intrigue.
